In 2015 Susan and I left home April 4, and spent 6 1/2 months traveling across the US to New England and into Canada's maritime provinces.  Not being focused purely on getting east as fast as possibl we began by traveling south along the Oregon and California coast.  From there we headed east via New Mexico, Colorado, the mid-western states, Kentucky, and Wisconsin before spending a week in Gettysburg. Not the most direct route but a good way to take advantage of spring across the midwest to arrive in Pennsylvania at the beginning of June.
We loved New England so much we decided to repeat in 2017.  This time we went more directly across the norhtern states and arriving in Massachusetts by the first of May.  Time constraints this time prevented us getting beyond Maine.  That was disappointing but maybe another year.
